Faculty of Archaeology at Sohag University organizes a Field Visit for the students to a Pottery Factory IN the village of Umm Doma

Faculty of Archaeology at Sohag University organized a field visit for the second-year students in the Department of Antiquities Restoration to a pottery factory in the village of Umm Doma, Tama town.

The visit is part of the students’ practical curriculum, aiming to connect them with the  ancient Egyptian heritage and develop their artistic skills.

Dr. Hassan El-Nomany, President of the University, highlighted the importance of organizing these visits for students to learn about and explore traditional crafts and their various arts, as part of a broader effort to strengthen identity and support entrepreneurship.

He explained that Umm Doma Village is the first model village in Sohag within the presidential “Decent Life” initiative to develop the Egyptian countryside.

Dr. Abdel Nasser Youssef, Vice President for Education and Student Affairs, said that during the visit, the students were introduced to the traditional techniques used in shaping and firing pottery, its various stages, from preparing the clay to drying, traditional firing techniques, and the types of kilns used.

Dr. Fahim Hijazi, Dean of the faculty, explained that the visit came within the framework of practical training for the “Pottery and Archaeological Ceramics Techniques” course, combining theoretical aspects with practical real-world experience.

This enhances students’ understanding of the subject and facilitates the application of precise restoration methods.
