(English: U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Ranking).
It is a classification issued by US News & World Report annually for international universities. On October 28, 2014, the magazine, which began ranking American universities in 1983, published its inaugural global ranking, evaluating 500 universities in 49 countries. The first installment of the Best World University Rankings was published without prior announcement, with the magazine later clarifying that that year’s rankings were a trial balloon for the publication’s entry into the field of world university rankings. After previously announcing next year’s rankings, in 2016, the journal formalized the World University Rankings as part of its regular annual programmes.
After the ranking methodology became official, it explained that it is based on 10 different indicators that measure universities’ academic performance and reputation. Since then, the ranking has been revised and expanded to include 1,500 institutions in 81 countries and now includes five regional rankings and 28 topics. Using 13 indicators and based largely on data, the journal’s global ranking differs methodologically from that of US institutions; Global universities are ranked using factors such as research reputation, academic publications and number of highly cited papers.
