The Digestive System Unit at Sohag University Emergency Hospital is a model for Advanced and Integrated Care for Prevention and Early Detection of Tumors

Dr. Hassan El-Nomany, President of Sohag University, stated that the Gastroenterology Unit in the Department of General Internal Medicine is a vital unit that provides distinguished medical services within the University Emergency Hospital.

He praised the unit’s efforts in receiving and treating hundreds of emergency cases and its role in national campaigns for early detection of colon cancer, as part of its social responsibility and commitment to prevention and early detection.

 

From his part, Dr. Magdy El-Qady, Dean of Faculty of Medicine and Chairman of the Board of Directors of University Hospitals, confirmed that the unit provides advanced care to patients, particularly in cases of acute gastrointestinal bleeding.

He noted that 542 emergency upper endoscopies have been performed to control bleeding, in addition to 138 emergency colonoscopies for rectal bleeding resulting from tumors or immune diseases such as ulcerative colitis.

Dr. Ahmed Kamal Abdel Hamid, Executive Director of University Hospitals, explained that the unit operates around the clock and utilizes the latest treatment techniques, such as ligation of esophageal varices, injections for active gastric ulcers, and the use of metal clips, in addition to providing advanced services in stent placement and esophageal stricture dilation.

In the same context, Dr. Nayel Abdel Hamid, Head of the General Internal Medicine Department, pointed out that the unit does not only treat emergency cases, but also provides a comprehensive system of diagnostic and follow-up services for patients with liver cirrhosis, gastrointestinal and liver tumors, and immune intestinal diseases such as Crohn’s disease.

It also monitors cases of bile duct obstruction and autoimmune hepatitis, and prescribes appropriate treatment through the ulcerative colitis clinic.
