The Academic Ranking of World Universities is a ranking compiled by the Institute of Higher Education affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University and includes major higher education institutions classified according to a specific formula based on several criteria to independently classify the best universities in the world. The original goal of this classification was to determine the position of Chinese universities in the field of Higher education and an attempt to reduce the gap between it and the best elite universities in the world. This classification is based on examining two thousand universities in the world out of nearly ten thousand universities registered with UNESCO that possess the initial qualifications to compete. During the second step of screening, 1,000 universities are ranked and again compete for a place in the top 500 universities published.
ARWU ranking criteria:
The criteria adopted to measure the efficiency and quality of universities in this classification are four:
Quality of education: (10%), which is an indicator of the institution’s graduates who received Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, and takes 10% of the final total.
Quality of teaching staff (40%): It is an indicator of faculty members who have received Nobel Prizes and Field Medals and takes a percentage of 20%. Also in this criterion is an indicator of the most cited researchers in 21 scientific specializations and takes a percentage of 20%.
Research outputs (40%): This is an indicator of articles published in the journals Nature and Science and takes 20%. Also, articles included in the Expanded Scientific Publishing Guide, the Publishing Guide for the Social Sciences, and the Publishing Guide for the Arts and Humanities take 20%.
Institution size (10%): It is an indicator of academic achievement relative to the above standards and takes 10%.
Sohag University ranking:
From this ranking, another ranking emanates, which is the global classification of academic subjects, in which Sohag University succeeded in the 2023 ranking by demonstrating excellence in the field of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Science, obtaining the rank 301-400, and in the field of Mathematics, obtaining the rank 401-500 at the level of world universities.
