University Hospital

University Hospital was established in 1978 as a hospital affiliated to the educational hospitals authority, then ownership of the eastern part was transferred to Assiut University in 1992, with the inauguration of the Faculty of Medicine. The ownership of the western part was also transferred to the university in 200I. The hospital includes twenty-one clinical departments.

Currently operating Hospital consists of seven buildings

1 - Free treatment building

This building consists of five floors and a basement with total capacity of 300 beds, distributed as follows:

- The basement includes the stores, communication switch room and the central air conditioning unit.

- Ground Floor: allocated for the Departments of Clinical Pathology, Diagnostic Radiology, and a clinical teaching classroom.

- First round which includes the department of general surgery, operational wing shared by departments of general surgery, gynecology, medium-care unit, and a pharmacy.

- Second round: there is the Departments of Gynecology and Obstetrics, Pediatrics (including the intensive care unit for children), and a joint operations wing for departments of Urology and Ear, nose and throat.

- Third round is allocated for the departments of Urology and Orthopedics, ear, nose and throat and Ophthalmology.

- The fourth round is allocated for depts. of General Internal medicine, endemic diseases, neurology, dermatology, and a pharmacy.

2 - Hospital Emergency

It consists of five floors and basement with a capacity of 150 beds distributed as follows:

- Basement used as store.

- Ground Floor: There is the reception of General Internal accident injuries and blood bank and emergency laboratory.

- First round: specified for the reception of Orthopedic Surgery cases and gynecology and obstetrics and operational wing for each.

- Second Floor: there is a reception for the general surgery ward and its operational wing.

- Third Floor: There is the reception of burn cases, an operational wing, ICU, and a pharmacy.

- Fourth floor : There is the Office of the Director of the hospital emergency wards and doctors rooms.

 3 - Outpatient-clinics Building

This building includes 21 clinical departments, 2 pharmacies, medical laboratory, outpatient clinics and Department of Medical Registration and Statistics, the Social worker Office and the public Service Office, Nursing Office, and a computer room connected to the internet for the use of resident doctors and assistant staff at the hospital.

4 - Paid Treatment Hospital Building

The hospital is located on an area of 800 meters with a capacity of one hundred beds  and includes:

- Ground Floor: paid treatment accounts unit, Department of Oncology,

- First Floor: Paid-treatment administration room, Department of Oncology, Friends of tumor patient's association room.

- Second Floor: Education Development Center and a pharmacy, and paid-treatment wards.

- Third Floor: Director of the hospital office, Cardiac catheterization unit, and paid-treatment rooms.

- The fourth Floor: centre for Pediatrics Education Development Project, Depal1ment of Pediatrics, and Gynecology and Obstetrics operational wing and paid-treatment rooms.

- Fifth Floor: seminar room, and intensive care unit, and intensive care unit for heart patients, and paid-surgery wing

5 - Specialized Surgery Building

This building has a capacity of one hundred beds:

- Ground Floor: An extension of the Diagnostic Radiology Department, Endoscopy Unit and Urology dept.,

- First floor: Endoscopy Unit and Chest Diseases, Wing of the heart and chest surgery (including a special unit for intensive care for these patients), a branch of eye operations, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Department of Neurosurgery.

 - Second floor: Department of Pharmacy, Pavilion of neurosurgery, Endoscopy Unit and the digestive system, resident doctors' suite.

- Third floor: a unit for premature babies, doctors living-lounge. - The fourth I1oor: gynecology Education Enhancement Project, resident doctors' suite.

6-Educational Building

This building contains 30 classrooms and two teaching halls (amphitheatres), and 10 specialized clinics on the ground floor.

7 - Administrative building

This is a two-floor building:

- Ground Floor: Financial and Administrative Director room, Store-Department, pharmacy, medical devices maintenance department, electrical maintenance department, refrigeration and air conditioning maintenance department, a security room,

- First Floor: Personnel Office, doctor's Affairs Department, accounts management room

Buildings under construction

 Three more buildings are under construction, and are expected to add to more than 700 beds.

 - Restoration of the western wing of the free treatment building, and expected to be completed by the end of 2008 to add about 300 beds, at a cost of $ 37 million. It will be allocated for internal medicine.

 - The establishment and completion of the surgery building. It is expected to finish by the end of 2009 and to add about 300 beds, 24 operating rooms, 12 intensive care rooms. It will be allocated to the surgery departments, at a total cost exceeding 70 million pounds. - Constructing a new building for paid treatment, under the name of critical cases building, in the eastern side of the hospital at a total cost exceeding 3 million pounds.

Future Construction Projects

I - An area of 7000 square meters in New Sohag has been allocated to create a ne' university hospital at the highest level. Design has already been prepared for this huge hospital
