Since its opening in Sohag in 1991, the faculty of medicine has been playing an outstanding role in the educational process, scientific research, and community service in upper Egypt. Over the last two decades, the faculty has through different stages of development. First, the faculty was apart of Assuit university, which gave her an opportunity to benefit from the achievements of the experts of this prestigious university. On the establishment of South Valley university, the faculty of medicine was separated from Assiut university, and became one of the colleges of this university. This gave it the opportunity to benefit from the unlimited support of the ambitious plans of South Valley university. In 2006, the establishment of Sohag university achieved the faculty's dream of being a part of the university in the same location as the faculty.

 
         Despite the short age of the faculty which did not reach the end of the second decade, we can see its achievements on a number of levels. In the educational process, thirteen batches graduated from the faculty. And the faculty awarded a large number of doctoral and master's degrees, and diplomas, in its eighty-three postgraduate educational programs. The faculty staff members have published numerous scientific papers, and participated in many scientific conferences at both local and international levels.

 Community service and the development of the surrounding environment are high on the faculty's agenda, as well as strengthening cooperation with the local community.

The faculty aims to obtain academic accreditation by the National Authority for quality Assurance and Accreditation of Education (NAQAAE). this is a higher goal that should be served by all strategic objectives of the faculty.  All staff members, assistants, employees, students, and stakeholders  of the faculty must be proud when this goal is achieved. I call on everyone not to miss the chance, and to make sacrifices in order to achieve this noble goal. In this regard, the faculty does not fail to commend the support to the Project Management Unit, Ministry of Higher Education, and the university administration, led by Prof./ Mohamed Sayed Ibrahim, President of the university, who made the achievement of this goal one of the strategic objectives of the University.
